RE: A BRIEF UPDATE. Check it out, you may be glad you did!

To those of you who have checked in on my blog, I thank you. Also to those of you who communicated your golf swing questions to me over the past several weeks. Great to hear from golfers around the world.

If you do check in from time to time, keep coming back as I have some VERY exciting news I hope to be able to share with all of you in the next few weeks.

This is no joke. I have been approached to help get a revolutionary product to market with a formal unveiling at the 2012 PGA MERCHANDISE SHOW in January '12.  Again, if you've read some of  my posts you will know what the product is.

The information you see here in the coming weeks will put you ahead of your golfing partners and may even improve YOUR GAME so stay tuned.

For an old retired teaching professional, I gotta tell you.....THIS is about as excited as I have been in over a decade and anyone who knows me knows I just don't get too excited over new products in the golf industry very often........

Keep checking in and when I begin posting about this, you WILL be glad you did.

Cheers!

I'd like to hear from YOU. Golfers around the world

Steve@wnri.com is my email address and I'd like to hear from you.

You can listen to some of my interviews from previous shows like Gregor Jamieson, international teaching pro and Tour Coach, Marius Filmater, Putting Coach to the Tour,  Donald Crawley, Top 50/100 teaching pro as designated by Golf Magazine and the director of instruction for the John Jacobs Golf Schools in the U.S. for over 20 years, Dean Reinmuth, coach to many tour players including many international players as well as Phil Mickelson from the age of 13 years through his earning the first $7M, U.S. on the PGA TOUR and more.  I am sure all golfers will enjoy and learn from these interviews. The link to Podcasts is: http://www.mynegm.com/users/steveriggs#podcasts

While there is more, I want to reach out to those of you around the world how have checked my blog from time to time.

I am simply interested in hearing from golfers everywhere with their comments and ideas for anything they might like me to cover on my Radio/Internet Show and or in my writing.

Having been a teaching professional for over 30 years and not a writer or talk show host, I am always reaching out to my listeners locally for ideas.

The Golf Swing is one of the only things I know about. That said, I am one who is always learning.  In all my years of teaching I have NEVER told a student they had to 'do something'.....Teaching is about communication and as such it is about how people process or learn...and every person learns differently.  This is why I am so very interested in what people think and feel about their swing.

For this old teacher, the Internet has opened a brand new opportunity for ME to learn from YOU....and this is why, I believe, I have been somewhat successful for the past 30 or so years.

I do hope to hear from you soon with what YOU think about YOUR golf swing and what YOU  might like to hear discussed on the myNEGM LESSON TEE Radio/Internet Show that is heard around the world every Wednesday from 10:05-11:00am Eastern Time Zone.

I do hope to hear from you.

Again, my email is:  steve@wnri.com

Cheers and good golfing!

Golf Channel's Casey Bierer joined me on the LESSON TEE Show

Casey Bierer, former reporter and producer at THE GOLF CHANNEL joined me last week on the LESSON TEE Internet/Radio Show to tell listeners of his new project.

Casey and his brother Don have a new gig.  They are General Managers of a golf course in New England.  That's right, Casey has changed hats and is Co-GM with his brother Don of Wentworth Hills Golf Club in Plainville, Mass.

With Don's experience in golf course acquisition, construction and operation in addition to a very successful career as an asset manager AND Casey's background in marketing and media, this duo promises to turn an absolutely terrific facility that has had one bad management team after another since opening in 2001 into a profitable facility worthy of being one of the premier facilities in all New England.

In addition to Casey filling us in on his new project, we also chatted about some of his experiences over this 6 years as a reporter and producer at THE GOLF CHANNEL.

Casey will be joining me from time to time on the LESSON TEE Show with updates on the club's 'road back' to profitability.

TOUR Player Brad Adamonis' waiting pays off! He is in the U.S.OPEN!!!!

With several alternates from other sites already landing spots in this year’s Open, ahead of Brad are Team New England’s J.J. Henry and Zack Bird.
With 5 alternates already having been given spots, there is a chance Adamonis could get the call.
Several factors are in play and the way the USGA operates, my ability to ‘get it right’ would be like jumping out of an airplane without a parachute. So, best if we wait together until next week to see if northern Rhode Island’s favorite ‘golf’ son gets a spot in the 2011 U.S. OPEN at Congressional Country Club.
THIS UPDATE: Brad has made it! Adamonis along with Gary Woodland were the final picks by the USGA to compelte this year's US OPEN field for 2011.
What I can share from a teaching standpoint is this: In my chats with Brad, (on and off the myNEGM LESSON TEE Show), as the season has progressed, and keeping an eye on his stats, I will tell you I am very optimistic Adamonis will regain his status on the PGA TOUR soon. His perspective surrounding his steady improvement and the way he seems to be taking the normal ‘speed bumps’ of competitive golf in stride has this ‘ole teacher’ more steadfast than ever this Cumberland, RI native is on the right track.
Will he get in to the U.S. OPEN this year? We will see, but in answer to the question: Will Brad Adamonis ever play in a U.S. OPEN? My answer is a resounding YES!

Hickory Golf and Hickory Clubs Making Comeback

It was a great interview on the LESSON TEE Internet/Radio Show today with Mitchell Laurance, actor, ESPN's Billiards Commentator, all around nice guy AND devoted player of Hickory Clubs.

During our chat, Mitch shared with me his devotion to playing golf literally the old fashion way; with Hickory Golf Clubs!

Over the past decade intrest has grown, around the world, in actually playing golf with the original equipment from hickory clubs right down to the balls used during golf's 'childhood'.  This resurgence has most definitely hooked Mitch Laurance who can occasionally be seen wearing his Kilt or a pair of Knickers as he plays a round of golf on some 'ole sod'.  But seriously, I find this a refreshing trend.

There are golf tournaments in the U.S., Austria and Scotland to name a few countries where the use of hickory clubs, period golf balls and the like have taken hold.  As an example, the 2011 National Hickory Championship is in White Sulphur Springs, WVA at the Oakhurst Club this week.  And the 2011 Austrian Hickory Championship is next week.  Also is the Seniors Hickory Texas Scramble being held at Forres Golf Club in Muiryshade, Forres Scotland on June 11th. Oh, and did I mention the U.S. Hickory Open being held at the famed French Lick Springs Resort in Indiana this year?

Louisville Golf Company here in the U.S. is one of the biggest makers of Hickory Shaft replicas of yesteryear.  In fact, Laurance tells me the club are STILL actually HAND MADE.

There are websites dedicated to this new, old,and GRAND sport.  Check out hickorygolf.com  and hickorygolfers.com as well as louisvillegolf.com which has a section on Hickory Clubs.  These are just a few sites. there are many more.

Being an 'ole' golfer, again I found Mitchell's information on Hickory Golf fascinating and plan on looking into it more.  I am quite sure any golfer with even a little knowledge of the history of golf would enjoy learning more.

FYI:  I will put a link up the my interview with Mitchell Laurance and our chat about hickory golf as soon as I get it edited.

Cheers...and Oh, anybody know what a 'jigger' is?  And NO, it is not a shot glass....

PGA Teacher of the Year John Shelden talks swing issues....

John Shelden, PGA Teacher of the Year in  the California Desert Section, former head pro at    PGA WEST's private club, talks with me about his opinion regarding simple swing problems from the driver to the sand shot and putting.

John is the 2009-2010 PGA Teacher of the Year

His tenure as HP at PGA WEST and Tamarisk in the Palm Springs area, while great jobs lasting, in total for over 12 years, didn't give him time to show his real talent:  Teaching.

John and I have had marathon chats about different aspects of the golf swing and teaching and I was so glad when I heard he'd taken the head teaching job at Mountain View CC in LaQuinta, CA.

John Shelden is perhaps one of the most down to earth and straight forward 'golf communicators' I have been lucky enough to meet through the years.

The specifics of effective use of the mirror to improve your golf swing

It is time to get ready for the 2011 golf season and if you live in cold areas of the world, well, that is no excuse. The time to start is now, so, get off the couch and get a head start on a better swing and game. You only need a 5, 6 or 7 iron, a full length mirror and a little patience.
Actually, this infatuation I have with the mirror all started in 1983 when I set about rebuilding my own golf swing after being away from the golf profession for over 7 years.

My rebuilding efforts, hitting over 140,000 range balls in roughly a year and a half were, in large part, successful due to the time spent in front the mirror.

The mirror is a way to re-enforce proper basics which may have gotten out of whack over time. The basics are the place to start if you want to improve your golf swing. Oh, and that business golf you expect to use in 2011? By starting in front of a mirror to improve that swing, you are sure to help snag those ‘golf course deals’.

When using the mirror, don’t look into the mirror until you have completed the specific task you want to check, like your grip. The visual feedback gleaned will tell you if your grip, posture, weight distribution, arm positioning and alignment have changed from what it should be.

Now, taking that 5, 6 or 7 iron, grip the club and take your stance in the set up position. Do not look in the mirror.

With regards the grip: Once set up, take a look at your hands and how they are positioned on the club. Now look at your grip in the mirror. Check to be sure your grip is correct. Both ‘Vs’ generated between the thumb and index fingers are pointed at or towards the right or TRAIL ear, or mid way between that TRAIL ear and shoulder, (right shoulder for right hand golfers and left for left hand players). If adjustment is needed, relax your hands on the grip of the club and move your hands into the proper position. Look back down at your hands as you make adjustments, then look in the mirror to let your system ‘take it in’.

There is a good chance any correction you have to make is going to feel uncomfortable. When you look in the mirror, you are going to see that what you corrected does not look nearly as bad as it might initially feel! This is the feedback your system needs to confirm your brain is tricking you.

You need to see any changes you make externally. Otherwise, you may unintentionally go back to the old position, ‘overcook’, or exaggerate a position change you have made, making matters worse. This too can happen when you stop using the mirror for re-enforcement of your ‘set up mechanics’

Now, it is time to check your arm and shoulder positions. This requires two mirror views. Head on, facing the mirror and off the left or LEAD side.

Look into the mirror at how your shoulders are positioned. You might notice they are parallel to the ground. If so, relax your right or TRAIL shoulder as well as your neck muscles. This will cause the TRAIL shoulder to relax and wind up lower to the ground than the LEAD shoulder. In other words, you want your shoulders to be ‘tilted’ in relationship to the ground and parallel to each other and the target line.

You can also achieve this by feeling as if your TRAIL arm is literally ‘hanging’ from your neck muscles and shoulder socket. This may cause you to feel as if the grip of the club is simply ‘resting’ in the fingers of the right or TRAIL hand. GREAT, that is what we want!

Before you set up to the mirror off of your LEAD side, it helps if you first create a couple of lines on the floor to check your alignment to the target line. Two strips of tape or two golf shafts work well. Heck, a couple of yard sticks will work. Anyway, one line should represent the target or ball line, and the other your feet line. Both need to be parallel to each other and running perpendicular into the mirror.

Now, set up in the address position so your LEAD side only is pointing, looking or facing the mirror.

At this point you first need to see the relationship between your LEAD arm and the TRAIL arm. Do this by turning or cocking your head and looking into the mirror.

You should see that your LEAD arm is ‘above’ or ‘higher’ than your TRAIL arm which should appear in the mirror to be ‘under’ your LEAD arm. Again, looking in the mirror, your TRAIL FOREARM should be visible UNDER the LEAD arm. If not, try to further relax the shoulder, elbow and wrist of the TRAIL arm. Again, this will feel as if the TRAIL arm is literally hanging from the neck while the grip of the club will feel as if it is resting in the middle two fingers of the TRAIL hand.

Now, checking your shoulders, you should not be able to see any part of your TRAIL shoulder as you look in the mirror off the LEAD side. If you do, keep working the TRAIL shoulder and neck muscles until you are able to make it disappear from view WITHOUT turning or twisting your upper torso. If you do ‘turn’ your body, so you can’t see your TRAIL shoulder you may wind up with your shoulder plane literally across or closed to the target line. Oh, and being able to see the TRAIL shoulder in the mirror off the LEAD side means your shoulders are actually open to the target line.

In the next article I’m going to finish up with Alignment and move into How to Check and Correct Posture which can seem like a daunting task. Also we will talk about checking your Weight Distribution.

In closing, you are probably going to spend 2-4 minutes the first couple trips to the mirror. That is the bad news. The good news is that after a few repetitions the time frame will dramatically decrease to somewhere around 15-20 seconds for the ENTIRE SET UP ROUNTINE! I will explain in the next article.
