National Patriot Award Winner Bob Beach and 2 Other Pros Chat of Working with Wounded Warriors, Vets And The Disabled

Bob Beach was the recipient  of the 2013 PGA National Patriot Award for his tireless efforts bringing golf to Wounded Warriors, Veterans and the Disabled who might otherwise avoid the game due to their conditions. 

The Podcast highlights 3 PGA golf professionals in Bob Beach, Kirk Lucas and Daren MacKinnon.  These gentlemen have given back by helping  people with all types of physical challenges get involved in golf.

While the focus is the Wounded Warriors and Veterans, this Podcast's content applies to those who feel their particular physical challenges prevent them from getting into the game. After hearing from these 3 professionals, some may change their minds.

Bob Beach has been head Pro at Braintree Municipal Golf Course since 1991. His work with Veterans dates back to '91. He served on the National PGA Disabled Golf Committee from 2009-2012. An example of Bob's dedication is his giving 46 free golf clinics, incorporating New England PGA Professionals, to Veterans and Disabled Veterans at four locations in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Kirk Lucas has two teaching facilities in Warrenton and McLean Virginia which is just outside Washington DC. Kirk as worked with Salute Military Golfers Association, SMGA, founder Jim Estes, PGA. This past summer the SMGA hosted a Golf Weekend and Extravaganza. With the help of sponsors, renown professionals and celebrities, they raised over $300,000 to help the SMGA. Bob Beach is part of the SMGA's Boston Chapter.

Daren MacKinnon is assistant golf professional at Pine Oaks Golf Course, teaching and fitting professional at the Joe and Leigh's Golf Performance Center and Joe and Leigh's Discount Golf Pro Shop. All facilities are in Easton Massachusetts.

MacKinnon is one of a few Professionals in the country certified in what is a new club fitting nich, Adaptive Club Fitting. Simply put one of Daren's specialties is fitting Wounded Warriors and the Disabled to golf equipment that helps them play and get involved in golf. Daren also works with Bob Beach's clinics including those that focus on youngsters that are autistic.

Carol Mann, a Golf Legend and Woman of Conviction,Courage and Vision


Carol Mann is a legend in the world of Golf. A member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, Carol's service to the game spans over 50 years. As a player she captured 38 victories including 2 majors during her competitive career that began in 1961.

Mann became President of the LPGA during some its darkest hours. During her tenure she oversaw the restructuring of an orgaization suffering legal problems, low marale, poor public relations and poor prize money. That all began to change with Carol's assention to the presidency. Her tenure as president was 1973-1976. She continued on as a member of the Executive Board and Board of Directors, watching the LPGA become one of the most highly respected professional women's sports organizations anywhere. Today the LGPA attacts the best of women's golf talent from around the world. 

A few of Carol's accolades include: Babe Zaharias Award-1976, World Golf Hall of Fame induction-1977, Golf Magazine's "100 Heroes of American Golf, election to both Collegiate Golf Hall of Fame and Women's Sports Hall of Fame. Served as President of Women's Sports Foundation-1985-1990, recognized as one of LPGA's Top 50 Players and Teachers at the 50th Anniversary ceremonies in 2000 and recieptient of PGA of America's First Lady of Golf Award in 2008. In addition, she was an analyst for ABC, ESPN and NBC coverage's for both men's and women's golf.

Carol remains very active in her continuing service to Golf, teaching at the Woodlands Country Club outside of Houston in Woodlands, Texas as she gives the Gift of Golf to golfers of all skill levels. She is president of both Carol Mann, Inc. and Carol Mann Golf Services.

Listening to Carol talk about two events in her life that set the stage for the character and integrity that is so much a part of who she is, the LPGA's challenges during her career and her presidency and finally her take on the differences between men and women when it comes to the golf swing is facinating and thought provoking in that order.
